about

I wrote this album while I was going through the discernment process to become an Anglican priest. Once I was selected to train for ordination I ceased to have the funds or the time to finish the LP as I originally intended, so what lies a click away from you now is a 'ghost album': a collection of working versions and demos of these songs. You'll hear guide vocals, ramshackle rhythm tracks and first draft lyrics - all of which have a refreshing truth to them, so I shan't apologise! The good drums are played by James De'ath; the crap drums and everything else is me.

about

Rev Simpkins & the Phantom Notes UK

Notorious sinner-songwriter, folk symphonist & Anglican curate.
The Rev’s unique psychedelic gospel and freak folk owes as much to the Old Testament, & the dark folk tales & barren landscapes of his native Suffolk, as it does to his musical heroes Nick Drake, Captain Beefheart & Blind Willie Johnson. He comes from a long line of priests & preachers whose fiery performances characterise his style. ... more

Track Name: Rose Alleyn, 17, Colchester Martyr
My sweet love Rose
Faithfully chose to be burned in the fire
All for the Word loved, read & heard
In the tongue of her fathers

Meekly suffered the candle’s pain
Martyred praying in Mary’s flames

How was my love less than enough
To cause sorrow in parting?
What Love is this? What God of bliss
Would turn lovers to martyrs?

Anger, wedded to sorrow deep
Holds me, while you with Angels sleep
Or so I am told…

Cold candlelight fights with the night
On the page of my bible
I search to find the heart & mind of my Rose

Given glorious liberty!
Freedom I would lose readily to hold my Rose
Track Name: All Feeling Sense Seems to be Gone
I am a stranger here below
And what I am it’s hard to know
I am so vile, so prone to sin
I fear that I’m not born again

When I experience call to mind
My understand seems so blind
All feeling sense seems to be gone
Which makes me think that I am wrong
Track Name: Pelican
Pelican feeds the hungry and needy
I kneel before her my throat like an open grave

Food cannot fill me
Water dilutes me
Nothing contents me
Pelican, pity me

She tears her breast her children to refresh
By her I am blessed, saved from my own death

Though death entreats me
Her life flows sweetly
Given so freely
Given in flesh & blood

She tears her breast her children to refresh
By her I am blessed, saved from my own death

Pelican feeds me
Love me completely
Though I’m unworthy
She gives so graciously

She tears her breast her children to refresh
By her I am blessed, saved from my own death

She crowns the whole earth, the heavens & seas
The Pelican tears her breast for me

She’s queen of what was and what is to be
The Pelican tears her breast for me

She gives of herself in infinity
The Pelican tears her breast for me

She’s compassion & love
She’s strength and glory
The Pelican tears her breast for me
Track Name: Song of Songs
Upon my bed my soul sought its love
Sought him, but I found him not
I called aloud, but no answer came
So I rose to seek my love

Set me on your heart
Fierce as the grave are the flames of my passion for you

My lover spoke and said unto me,
Rise up, rise and come away
Though autumn’s ripeness must fade to death
Winter now is past
Winter can’t deny the spring

Set me on your heart
Fierce as the grave are the flames of my passion for you

Love is strong as death

Many waters cannot quench love
Neither can this love be drowned
If all the world’s wealth were offered for love
It would all be scorned
It would be scorned utterly

Set me on your heart
Fierce as the grave are the flames of my passion for you

Love is strong as death
And I’m nothing next to either
Who am I to deny either?
Who am I to resist either?
Who am I to fight with either?
Track Name: Lollard
My son, please read aloud these pages
Call your mother & sisters to hear
Then tear this letter as I now am torn
& burn it as I will be burned

I prayed “mute this mouth that condemns me!
Bind these feet which propel me to death!
Then pull from my ribs this heart so perverse
It would leave all my loved ones bereft!”

Mumbler, wanderer, Death tempting Gospeller
Peasant-tongued rambler
I’m a Lollard

The answer came in a deep stillness
When I knew that all suffering is shared
Yes if you suffer rage, it can soon be relieved
Share the Word, drink the wine, break the bread

Mumbler, wanderer, Death tempting Gospeller
Peasant-tongued rambler
I’m a Lollard

I’ll be half hanged and pulled gutless
And burned in a fire for my Lord
But the pain I can’t bear, nor comprehend
Is that I must be parted from you

Mumbler, wanderer, Death tempting Gospeller
Peasant-tongued rambler
I’m a Lollard
Track Name: The Apple Tree
The tree of life my soul has seen

Laden with fruit and always green

The trees of nature fruitless be
Compared with Christ the apple tree

His beauty doth all things excel

By faith I know but ne'er can tell

The glory which I now can see

In Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought

And pleasure dearly I have bought

I missed of all but now I see

'Tis found in Christ the apple tree

I'm weary with my former toil

Here I will sit and rest a while

Under the shadow I will be

Of Jesus Christ the apple tree

This fruit does make my soul to thrive

It keeps my dying faith alive

Which makes my soul in haste to be

With Jesus Christ the apple tree.
Track Name: Dunwich
My love, come down with me to the stony Suffolk shore
Where the curlew bows his head as the angry breakers roar
My love, take off your clothes and come into the sea
We’ll sink beneath the swells, search for the lost city

I hear those voices that will not be drowned

My love where are the towers, the steeples & the spires
From which the bells rang out as fishing boats retired?
Where are the crooked lanes, the streets, the market places?
Of cobbled roads & houses, the currents left no traces

I hear those voices that will not be drowned

My love where are the graves? Where do the townsfolk sleep?
Who mourns for them tonight?
Who does remembrance keep?
The waves devoured their bones & time their memory
Yes, time will come for you, tides roll relentlessly

I hear those voices that will not be drowned

My love, I spoke its name and know its form in dreams
But Dunwich is a city that can’t be touched nor seen
You ask how can I know what I can’t touch nor see;
The things that make me love, the things that make me be?

I hear those voices that will not be drowned
Track Name: Peace, be still.
My songs were raised to shrieks above the waves
I cursed the gales which blow us to our graves

There’s no mercy in this sea

No hope, no fight, no faith and no respite
I bid the storm rock me into night

There’s no mercy in this sea

In the moment everything seemed lost
Love had no virtue, selfishness no cost

There’s no mercy in this sea

Now here’s the truth and here’s the mystery:
That from the storm a still voice calls to me

Calls to me
Calls to me
Calls me out on to the sea
“ride the storm, walk to me
& I will bring you peace”
